午前４時半のテーマ

僕は部屋の古くて煤けたストーブの前に座っている。起き抜けのまま、ユルユルと湯気の上がるコーヒーマグを両手に捧げ、ボンヤリとフランネルのブランケットにくるまって、外を見る。昨日まで降っていた雪はピタリとやんででいて、夜はまだ明けない。空は薄紫色に滲んで透明に、世界はゆっくりと止まったまま…

４人編成、アイスランド出身、あまり知られていない1stを含めオリジナル・アルバム３枚をリリース。シガー・ロス（Victory Roseというほどの意味らしい）が産みだしてきた音には音楽の持つ永劫性やら、希望や混沌やらそんな様々が細かい雪のように結晶している。

このアルバム「( )」は本国、そしてアメリカで大きな評価を得た2nd 「Agaetis Byrjun」から２年後の2002年に発表された。タイトルの意味するところは『無題』。CD自体、ライナーにSigur-Ros.comの表記があるだけでクレジットはおろか曲名すら載っていない（実際のところ通称はあるのだけれど）。作品全体の雰囲気も真っ白なパッケージを象徴するかのようにミニマリスティックだ。詞に至ってはヴォーカリスト、ジョンジーによる造語（曰く”リスナーがそれぞれに解釈を与えてくれればいい”）という。ここまで徹底的に無名性を追求する作品は無かったのではなかろうか？2ndにあった装飾や展開の豊かさは削ぎ落とされ、ひたすらに繰り返されるテーマと積み上げられる音、それぞれはノイズの一音にまで意味があるかのように響く。T1のオルガンのシンプルなラインから始まり、T4の静かで暗示的な流れ、そしてそれぞれ１０分を超えるT7、T8を最後にそれは優しく、混沌としたノイズの中へ消え入っていく。

あんなにも凍てついた場所から届いた音がなぜこんなに優しく、暖かいのだろう？毎年、冬がくるたびに彼らのレコードを引っ張りだしては、不思議にこの疑問を繰り返す。

そして、それはちょうどあの夜明け前に聴こえてきた、そんな音なんだと思う。
