「北」からやってきた音

北というと、やはりどうしても敗北や死を連想してしまう。童話や小説でも北へ逃げる登場人物はどういう訳か悲惨な死を遂げることが多い（椹木野衣）。だが実際のところ、北から訪れる音楽の多くは美学やリリシズムをたたえつつ、しかし音作りにはゆったりとした暖かみがある。

ポーランド出身のDJ、March CichyとIgor PudioによるユニットSkalpelのセルフタイトルに成る1st アルバムもそんな資質に溢れた一枚だ。Ninja Tuneに送った「Polish Jazz」のデモが話題となり、昨年６曲入りEP「Sculpture」を発表。その簡明さと絶妙のバランス感は昨今の複雑化したシーンでは得難いものだ。

膨大な60'sポリッシュ・ジャズのコレクションから抜き出されたサンプルを基に再構築、「２１世紀のマニアに向けて新たに創造」されたト彼らのラックに、安易な「ネタ使用」などという言葉は侮辱ですらある。有機的に絡み合うブレイクは複雑に陥ること無く、全く別の生き物としてここに息づく。

T2 1958では女性ボーカルのメロディを裁断しつつ、チョップアップされたドラム、金管がピアノとともにドライブする。T6 Break Inのレイドバック感や暖かさ、T7 QuizやT9 Theme From Behind the CurtainのポストDnBとも言えるザックリとしたビートの使い方も良い。それぞれのトラックに盛り込まれたユーモアがT3やT8といったシリアスなトラックに対してカウンターとして効いている。そしてラストを飾るT10 Sculptureは様々に細かなブレイクを配しつつ、シンプルかつ玄妙にスウィングする

「サンプリングはアートか？」。Skalpelははっきりと「yes」を唱えるだろう。たった数秒のブレイクが全く新しいトラックとして、再創造される。そのプロセスに人々は驚き、高揚する。反復から生まれる創造こそ、人の営みだ。だからこそこの二人には、さらなる次を期待して良い。
