日本発のポップ・ミュージックには珍しく、クラブ／ジャズ・サイドからのサポートも厚いOrange Pekoe。藤本一馬とナガシマトモコの二人からなるこのユニットは、1998年の結成からライブを中心にした活動からブレイクし、2002年にメジャーから『Orange Plastic Music』でデビューしている。カンバラクニエによるジャケットデザインが印象的だったので、覚えている方も多いかと思う。タイトル通りに生演奏と藤本の傾倒する.compost/Schema的エレクトロニクスが有機的に組み合った出色の作品だった。

殆どベスト・アルバム状態だった1stほどの衝撃度は無いにせよ、昨年発表の2nd『Modern Lights』はさらにディープにジャズへのアプローチを試み、アルバム全体の統一性はさらに増している。１６名による完全一発録りを敢行したビッグ・バンド・チューンT2 『極楽鳥』。マイクがハウっても気にしない、見事なバップの一曲T4『スウィート・ムービー』。T5 『蓮』、T7『キセキ』で魅せる切れ味の増したビート。前作からさらに深まったブラジリタージが素晴らしいT8、T12。アフリカン・トライバルが心地よいT3 『夜明けの歌』。これだけミュージシャン・シップとヴァラエティに富み、かつポップらしい歌心は失われていない。

今夏発売された3rdアルバムは筆者未聴だが、先行のシングルを聴く限り一層スイングとドライブ感が増し、こちらも非常に楽しみなところだ。夏の夜にベランダでコロナでも片手にゆったりと楽しんで欲しい。
