選曲にせよ、オープンなスピリットにせよ、ジャイルズ・ピーターソンのDJとしての能力云々以前に、バイアス・レスなその姿勢はリスナーに感銘を与えずにはおかない。音楽なんて白でも黒でも国でもない。英国BBC Radio Oneにおける彼のプログラムが銘打つ通り、 それはいつだってWorldWideである。

なにしろ彼の懐は深い。９０年代初めにはアシッド・ジャズのDJとして認知されていた彼だが、選曲の幅の広さ、そして質の高さは、ジャンルを跨ぐ多くの国内外アーティストからの信頼を集めてきた。 WorldWiswでは年に何回かBrownswood Basementと題して彼の所蔵する膨大なオールド・ジャズのコレクションの一端が披露されたり、世界中から寄せられたホワイト盤（発売前のプロモ／サンプル盤）のみを２時間丸々使って紹介する時もある。先端と懐古、ブラックとホワイト、そんなジャンルや時代のギャップを彼は容易く越えていく。もちろん、根底に流れるのは果てしなく広い定義における”ジャズ”だ。

Gilles Peterson Presentsで既に何枚ものコンピレーションが出回っているが、今年発表された『Gilles Peterson WorldWide Exclusives』はトラックのすべてが本盤初収録という、まさにExclusiveな代物である。アーティストもMuzseekで以前紹介した馴染みの顔、Jazzanova、 Matthew Herbert、 2 Banks Of 4、 Domuの変名プロジェクトUmod、 Nicola Conte、 Build An Ark（彼らの作品も是非レビューしたい）、 Zero 7、 Gotan Projectと、とにかくゴージャス。

中でもCDではT1 The Cinematic Orchestra『A Wheel Within A Wheel』はオープニングに相応しい、重厚かつメロウな良トラック！冒頭の太く重いシンセベースのラインにゆっくりと重なるストリング・アンサンブルのメロディとローズ・ピアノの羊水のように柔らかく優しいバッキング。エンディングに向かう、ウィンドチャイムとリバース・エフェクトの後方で木管楽器のように響く幻想的なリード。生演奏を主体にしたこのグループの持つ魅力がエレクトロニクスと自在に戯れることで生まれた、極上の一曲だ。

軽快なMC（イギリス英語の訛りを身につけたかった…）とは真逆の、音楽への尽きせぬ愛と深い好奇心。まだまだ音楽の未来は信じられる、このアルバムにはそんなメッセージが溢れている。
