Millions Now Living Will Never Die / Tortoise

ロックというのは不可解な音楽だ。 ひたすらレーベル（レッテルというのか、この場合）を嫌い、全てに向かって「NO！」というサインをスプレイでまき散らしながら、自らは常に過剰なコマーシャリズムの末に瓦解し、そして再構築する。 その度に何かスリリングなことが起こる。

そう、Tortoiseをロックにカテゴライズすべきなのかどうか？このシカゴ出身の５人組のグループ、基本フォーマットは保守的なほどロックだ。 ギターを中心にして、１００人中１００人が ”バンドだ” と思うだろう、そんな編成である。

だが彼らの音楽的素養 （全員が複数の楽器を担当する） やサイドプロジェクトの充実ぶりは他のバンドにはあまり見受けられない。 特にキーパーソンであり、ドラムを中心にプロデュース業まで手がけるJohn McEntireはSea and Cakeで同じくドラム／音響を担当、自身のスタジオ ”Soma Electronic Studio” を運営するエンジニアでもある。

マッケンタイアの眼差しはロック的とは言い難い 「音そのもの」 に注がれている。 曲のある箇所ではビートが捩じれ、壊れ、一方でギターやベースがフィルターを通って別の楽器／音響装置に成り果てたり、柔らかく響くヴィブラフォンの残響音が解像度の低いエイリアス・ノイズにまみれていたりする。 それでいて決してアート／エクスペリメンタルに陥らない、ギリギリのラインでこうした要素を聴かせる。

『Millions Now Living Will Never Die』はTortoiseが９６年に発表し、シカゴ／音響系とも称されるジャンルを確立した、２枚目のアルバムだ。 ロックの持つダイナミズムやメロディ性を保ちつつも、前作から続く独自の音響実験をさらに推し進めている。

T1の２０分に及ぶ『Djed』の、ゆったりと変容する展開の巧妙さもあるが、ここであえて日本盤にリンクしたのはT7 『Gamera』がボーナストラックとして収録されているためだ。 アコースティックギターの素朴なメロディから徐々にバンド全体のうねりが紐解かれてゆく、９５年に１２”のみでリリースされたこの曲をTortoiseのベストとして挙げるファンも多い。

今年、６枚目になるアルバム『It's All Around You』を発表したTortoise、彼らのロック解体はまだ終わらない。
