iPod + iTunes / Apple

音楽のためのアカルイミライ

時代は流れに流れる。母のお気に入りレコードをボロボロにして怒られたのはほんの２０年前、世にコンパクト・ディスクなるものが産声を上げて間もない頃だ。デジタルという名の下に、CDはレコードを、 MDはカセット・テープを、劣化媒体として駆逐した （ヴァイナルはツールとして生き残ったけれど）。

そして2001年より、新しいムーブメントが起きている。

Appleがデジタル・ジュークボックスと銘打ってiTunesを発表したのは３年前の2001年、同年にiPodも発売された。コンピュータとネットを駆使したもう一つの音楽媒体の誕生である。

今、NYで地下鉄に乗ったとしよう。大げさではなく、乗客の手にあるガジェットで携帯電話の次に目につくのはPDAでもCDウォークマンでもない。真っ白なイヤフォンだ。それほどに、　iPod（＝ iTunes） はコア・ユーザーを越えて一般層に浸透してきている。このiTunes + iPodがAppleの中核を成す程の分野に成長することを確信していたのはリリース当時、スティーブ・ジョブズCEOくらいであったろうか。

その要因は？となると、もうこれは使ってもらうしかないーーーーCDをドライブに入れ、iTunesに読み込む。当然、トラックやアーティストの名前はiTunesがネットから探してきてくれる。もしiPodを持っているなら、今取り込んだトラックを転送しておく。設定次第でこれら全てを自動化することも可能だ。所要時間はマシンの性能によるけれど、コーヒーを作って、飲む頃には終わっている。そしてiPodを取り外して、外に出る。誇張でもなんでもなしに、『Music In, Music Out』だ。

たったこれだけ、と思うだろうか。でも筆者と同年代以上で、「カセット」Walkmanを使っていた方には（若人にはNetが付く前のMDなんかを想像してもらおう）、音楽を外へ連れていくのがiPodに較べていかに面倒か、理解してもらえるはずだ。

勿論、過去にこういった類いのソフトウェア／ガジェット（例えばCD->MP3）は数多くあった。有名どころでいえばWindows Media Player（WMP）やWinAmp、RioやSonyのNetWalkmanだろうか。だが、ユーザビリティとシンプルさを兼ね備え、かつソフト／ハードウェアをシームレスに繋ぐ、そんなシステムは皆無だった。iTunesとiPodの連携の見事さは間違いなく音楽のState of the Artだ。さらにiPodの存在を抜きにしても、iTunesは単体の音楽アプリケーションとして非常に優れている、と強調しておこう。

iTunesはWindowsヴァージョンも用意されている。4.6からWMAフォーマット変換に対応したことでWMPからの乗り換えも容易となった。

iTunesの軽快な操作性、そしてiPodが生む音楽遍在化の実現。2003年、USA iTunes Music Store（つい先頃ヨーロッパ、イギリスでも始動）の開始によって、Appleは音楽コンテンツまでもユビキュタスに成らしめた。今夏に於けるDeveloper's Conferenceで新型iPod発表の噂も聞かれる。まだまだ先があるのだ。

Appleの垣間見る音楽のミライは、明るい。
