股間に人形を擦りつけ、切ないほど色っぽい顔をする親父。このアルバムのジャケット＜拡大＞を初めてみた時すごい不快感が込み上げてきたのを思い出す。

しかし、そのジャケットとは対極を成す彼の美しいメロディに聴いてみて心の底から感動した。

Jim o'Rourkeはシカゴ出身のギタリスト、プロデューサー、エンジニアいろんな肩書きを持つアーティストで、現在はSONIC YOUTHというロックバンドの正式メンバーにもなっている。

このアルバム『Eureka（ユリイカ）』の影響力は計り知れず、見たことはないが青山真治監督作品『ユリイカ』のタイトルはこのアルバムから引用したらしい（主演の役所広司もびっくりだ）。どうやら日本が大好きな人のようで、続く2001年にリリースした『Insignificance』＜ジャケット＞も同様ジャケットは漫画家『友沢ミミヨ』が手掛けている。

まず聴いて耳に残るのがT1『prelude to 110 or 220/women of the world』、そしてT7『eureka』だ。T1はほとんどが同じフレーズの繰り返しなのだが、後半になるに連れて音数がどんどん増えていき、気付いたらトランス状態とも言うべきか音にもっていかれてしまう。
T7でもゆっくりと弾かれたギターループの上に優しいシンセサイザーの音が徐々に増えていき、クライマックスは壮大で感動すら覚える。音はとにかく繊細で彼の非凡なセンスが感じられる。

タイトルの『Eureka』とはアルキメデスが浮力の原理を発見した時に叫んだ、「見つけた!, わかった!, しめた! （米国 California州の標語）」という意味を持つ言葉。このアルバムを聴いたあなたにも何か新しい発見があるかもしれない。
