革新的であり続けることは、ひどく難しい。 時折無意味にすら感じる。 前方を見つめ続けること、 ２０世紀以降のアーティストに多少の差はあれ課されてきた、無謀なほどの進歩主義に応え続けること。 確かにそこから逃げずに立ち向かう人の姿はポップで美しい。

だけどそれだけで人は本当に前へ進んでいけるだろうか？

4heroはイングランド出身、DegoとMarc Macからなるユニットである。 １９９０年代初頭から半ばにかけて、Drum'n'Bassというジャンルを他のアーティストと共に確立してきたパイオニアの一員だ。 レゲェ／ヒップホップの倍速再生に特化したジャングルという叩き台、かれらはそこへもっと大きな可能性を持ち込み、最先端のジャンルへと進化させた。

勿論、どんな音楽もポップ・ミュージックである限り粗製濫造とコマーシャリズムで陳腐化していく。 Drum'n'Bassも例外ではなかった。 4heroが1998年に放ったアルバム『Two Pages』は、そうなれば最良であったはずのDrum'n'Bassの姿とその死を提示し、別の、全く新しい未来を予告して幕を閉じた。

以降、少数の例外を除いて彼らはDrum'n'Bassのプロダクションを行っていない。

３年前、一つの未来を連れた彼らが『Creating Patterns』をドロップした。 そこにはギラギラとサイバネティックな輝きを放つかつての世界は無く、かわりに過去と未来が間断なく立ち現れ暖かく混じり合う、オーガニックで新しいスタイルが産み落とされていた。

複雑に刻まれるサンプルされたビートと生ドラム／パーカッションの絶妙な配分、スモーキーなウッド・ベースのドライブ感と柔らかく包み込むストリング・アンサンブル／ローズ・ピアノの響き。 ここでは全てが刷新され、かつどこまでも「彼ら」である。 ミュージシャンにRoy Ayersを迎えてバリにファンクしてみたり、Minnie Ripertonの『Les Fleur』を結構そのままカバーしたり、過去を尊び、今に取り込むことで前に進んでいく、そんな確認作業が伺える。

もう一度、ここでは新しい時代が高らかに、謳われている。
