何に驚くといえば、ソフィア・コッポラのサウンドトラックに注ぐ情熱とこだわりだ。日本でも公開の映画 『Lost in Translation』 のサントラに並んだメンツをみてもつくづくそう思う。前作 『Virgin Suicide』 でラストに流れるAIRの起用の仕方といい、昨今の映画には無い音楽的な側面での整合性も生み出した彼女だ。単に映像を際立たせるだけではない、音楽を常に切り離せない一つの物として扱うその姿勢は尊敬に値する。

今作でも注目を集めたのは、グラスゴー出身、My Bloody ValentineのKevin Shieldsが楽曲を提供したことだろう。彼を再び表舞台に引き上げたコッポラには惜しみない喝采を挙げたい。

８０年代初頭に活動を始めたこのバンドが1991年発表した 『Loveless』 は、シールズの狂暴でメロウな音世界が完璧なまでに具現化された、ブライアン・イーノの言によれば、 「ロックの新しいスタンダード」を作り上げたアルバムだった。

問題はそのアルバムの完成度があまりにも高かったことだ。その後まもなくして、バンドはいっさいの活動を停止、今日まで沈黙を保っている。いや、その間、Kevin Shields自身はプライマル・スクリームを初めとした、プロデューサー／リミキサー業に携わってはいたが、数年ごとに持ち上がるバンド再結成／新譜リリースの噂は、流れては静かに消えていった。

このアルバムにはボーカル曲も含め、シールズの手による４曲が収録されている。上記のサイトでもサントラの一部が試聴出来る。T1 『Intro/Tokyo』 からT2 『City Girls』 の流れにはちょっと胸が締めつけられるような甘い切なさがある。加えてT6、T10、T14が彼によって書き下ろされた曲だ。

他に先日紹介したSquarepusherによるアンビエント（T3）、AIRの未発表曲 T12 Alone in Tokyo、Cornelius = 小山田圭吾が監督に推薦したという、T9 はっぴぃえんど 『風を集めて』、そしてMy Bloody Valentine（T12）、Jesus And Mary Chain（T15）と、いずれの曲も映像内で最大の効果を生み出している。

もちろん映画自体も素晴らしい。一見のエキセトリックさの下に流れる、ユニバーサルなテーマ。このサイトの趣旨を無視してレビューしてしまいたいくらいだ。ぜひ劇場で体験してほしい。
