アフリカ系アメリカ人が人口の70％以上で、1980年代アメリカ中から殺人都市と呼ばれるほどの犯罪率を誇る町、デトロイト出身のハウス・クリエイターmoodymannが今回の主役。自らを“不機嫌な男”と名乗るだけあって曲も独特の黒いオーラに包まれ、これが最高にかっこいい。

彼を中心とするデトロイトDeep Houseシーンは最近日本のクラブシーンで注目されている。彼の盟友Theo Parrishの来日イベントは2000人以上が西麻布yellowに集まり、その注目度の高さを示した。しかしmoodymann自身は日本人があまり好きではないらしく（理由は俺たちの音楽を真似しようとするから）、来日イベントもわざと週末を外すらしい。聞きたい奴だけ来ればいいというのである。そんな態度に惹かれる人も多いようだ。

音は基本的にローファイで独自の仕上がり、ざらついた感じを聞き手に与える。彼の音単体に対するこだわりは相当なもので、アルバム全体を通して感じられる。構成もミニマルで同じフレーズが淡々と続くのだが、独自の黒い雰囲気のなかに入り込めば心臓がドキドキしっぱなしだ。聞いていてスリリングである。「これがデトロイトか…」と感じられる作品。
