1975年自動車事故で軽傷を負い、身動きするのが面倒だったイーノ。ベッドで友人が持ってきたハープのレコード音は片チャンネルしか出ず、しかもとても小さな音量だった。仕方なくそのままの状態で聞き続ける。その時、外の雨音の隙間を縫って時々聞こえるその微かな音楽が、音楽というよりむしろ環境の一部をなすものとして現れ、彼は音楽の一つの形を見出すに至った…。これがブライアン・イーノの生んだAmbient（アンビエント）というジャンル誕生の瞬間である。

ブライアン・イーノ、彼は70年代初頭Roxy Musicというバンドのサウンド・エンジニアとしてシーンに現れ、脱退後自らの音楽を追究し続けることで数々の名盤を生み出した。彼の活動は多岐にわたり、一言で音楽家といってしまう事も躊躇してしまうほどだ。本も執筆しているし、自分の求める音楽を作るためにその音楽を作るソフトを開発したりもしている。そのソフトを用いて音楽を再生すると一度として同じ音にはならないという。

ちなみにWindows 95『The MicroSoft Sound』の起動音を作ったのも彼。今や世界的なロックバンドU2やDavid Bowieをプロデュースしたのも彼である。ブライアン・イーノの影響を受けた音楽家は数知れず、その影響力はこのレビューを読んでいるあなたの手元のCDにも必ずどこかで関係しているだろう。

今回紹介するCDは、アンビエント・ミュージックを完成させる以前の作品で1975年に世に出た。中身を簡単に言えばイーノ音楽の過渡期だろう。このアルバムの中には、初期のロック的な音楽と後のアンビエント・ミュージックの片鱗を垣間みる事ができる。『Another Green World』というタイトルから想像できるように不思議な作品にしあがっている。インストと歌ものが半々で収録されていてイーノの“ふにゃふにゃしたヴォーカル”が聞けるのがおもしろい。しかし、個人的には圧倒的にインストのほうがかっこいいと思う。T5『The Big Ship』、T11『Becalmed』、T12『Zawinul』は時代を超越しており、2004年の今聞いてもなんの古さも感じさせない。

人間の強さ、弱さ、哀しさ、美しさを感じさせてくれるこの作品。そしてブライアン・イーノ、一生色褪せる事はないでしょう。
