Three Street Worlds / 2 Banks of 4

誰もが一聴するだけでその素晴らしさの分かる、そんな音楽がある。

２００３年はAcid Jazz復権の年（？）と呼べるほど、ヨーロッパ／クラブ廻りでJazz（もちろん広義の意味で）が盛り上がりをみせた。しかしホワイト（テスト）盤の段階で多数のDJ からプッシュされていた『One Day」収録のTwo Banks of Four　アルバム『Three Street Worlds』の完成度は白眉であったといえる。

つい先日もGilles Petersonがレジデントを務めるプログラム、WorldWide Maida Valleに於いてスタジオ・ライブを披露したこのグループは、ロンドン在住のDJ、Dillip HarrisそしてRobert Gallagherによるプロジェクト。デビューは1999年。生楽器を基調にオーガニックでありつつも、そこへ絶妙なエレクトロニック要素を織り込み、現代的な音作りをも保っている。そして何より彼らの楽曲の質の高さは特筆に値するだろう。

T3 『One Day』はジャンルを超えてお薦めしたい一曲だ。力強いグルーブを打ち出すウッド・ベースのイントロからピアノとの絡み、ボーカルのValerie Etienneが歌い上げるメロディー、ウィンド／ホーンセクションの鳴らす熱いコーラス、後半のメインを張るサキソフォン・ソロと、書ききれない魅力を持ったトラックだ。同じくボーカルの魅力を堪能できるT7 『Unclaimed』、バンドが一体となって作り出すドライブ感にあふれるT4 『Banks of the Nile』、アルバムラストを飾る2bo4的ファンクネス全開のT12 『Rising』等、２００３年のムーヴメントを総括する一作に仕上がっている。

『One Day』、『Unclaimed』は廻りでも人気が高い。メロディの良さがすぐに耳に馴染んでくるからかな。どちらも小難しいこと抜きに、聴いて心地よい曲。
