Protection / Massive Attack

新作の『100th Window』にはちょっとしたトーンダウンを感じざるを得なかったけど、1st『Blue Lines』から『Mezzanine』に至るまでのマッシブ・アタックの道筋はかなりエキサイティングだ。それぞれのアルバムは一聴まるで異なった印象を聞き手に残す。にも拘らず、Reggae、Hip-Hopのゴツゴツとした要素をゲストらと共に一つのアルバムに溶かし込んでいくその手法、そして自らの音楽に対する純粋な姿勢は常に、一貫している。

2nd『Protection』（とコインの裏表をなす『No Protection』Remixed by Mad Professor）はプロデューサーにNellee Hooper、ゲストにEverything But the GirlのTracy Thorn、元同僚のTricky、Nicolette、そして今でも親交の深いHorace Andyと、鉄壁のメンツ。透明感のあるプロダクションと張りつめた緊張感。メンバーのMushroom（辞めちゃったけど）、Daddy G、Del Naja、三人の持つタレントをHooperが神業的にまとめあげている。

その音は１０年経った今も褪せることなく、響く。

個人的にT1 Protection、T2 Karmakoma、そしてT4 Weather Stormは、自分がこの分野にハマり込むことになった決定的な曲でもあって、当時を色々と思い出す。初めて買ったサンプラーで最初に必死こいて打ち込んだのはProtectionだったし。今聴いてもやっぱヤバいよ、これ。スネアのゲート処理とか。トリップホップなんてジャンルもありましたな、そういえば。内ジャケのTB-303とかも「らしくて」良いよね。
