知る人ぞ知る2004年大注目のロックバンドOceanlaneが2月4日、遂にアルバムデビューを果たした。メンバーは、ロサンゼルス育ちのHAJIME（Vo＆Gt）とイギリス人の父を持ち、高校時代をイギリスで過ごしたKay（Gt &Vo）。

昨年の12月にはアメリカ西海岸で絶大な人気を誇るThe All American Rejectsの来日公演をサポート、翌年1月には日本初上陸を果たしたロック・フェス「Vans Wraped Tour’04 Winter」にも参加し、今急成長を遂げている。

今回は、友人でもあるOceanlaneのギタリスト、KayのMuzseek独占インタビューです。

― 2人（Hajime & Kay）の出会い、現在までの経緯について教えてください。

Hajimeとは中学からの同級生で聞いているバンドも同じだったりした。そこでお互いにかっこいいバンドのＣＤを貸し合っていたりして、2000年ぐらいからドラムとベースを入れてバンドを始めてみようということになりました。

最初の１年はひたすら曲を書き続けながらドラムとベースを探していたよ。それから200１年から同じ学校に通っている先輩（Ba）と友人（Dr）と一緒に活動をスタートさせた。

1年経って先輩（Ba）が抜け、新しいベースが入って、自主制作でシングル『Everlasting Scene』を作った。2003年3月にはベース、ドラムが脱退し、Ho Lee Kwen（Ba）とMasaya（Dr）と共に今回の1stアルバム『On my way back home』をレコーディングしました。

― Kayが尊敬しているアーティストは誰ですか。

好きで影響されたりするアーティストは沢山いるけど、Oasisのノエルギャラガー とかRadiohead,二－ルヤング、TravisのフランヒーリーやBlurとかだね。

― 今後どんな曲を作っていきたいと考えていますか。

とにかくいい曲、いいメロディーを書きたい。廃れないメロディーを。誰でもあると思うけどこの曲を聴くとあの頃を思い出すとか、そんな1曲になれるだけでも嬉しい。大事なのは曲がバンドからひとり立ちして人の心に深く刻まれることなんだと思います。

― 今回のアルバムでオススメの曲。また、曲をピックアップして少しずつ解説ください。

お勧めの曲を選ぶのは本当に難しいけど、3曲目の『Ships and Stars』とか5曲目の『Million』は結構気に入っています。理想通りの曲に完成させることが出来たので、何回聴いてもらっても飽きないと思うよ。メロディーを変えたりしながら作ったので、仕上がるまで苦労しました。

７曲目の『Ten seconds』は激しい感じがあっていいかな。あと、8曲目の『Broken wings』は俺が歌ってます。今回のアルバムではコーラスが多いので、それ言うと知らない人は「えっ、Kay君も歌たってるんだー」と驚きます（笑。
