スティーヴィー・ワンダーのことは皆知っているはず。大きなサングラスにブレードヘア。K-1にも登場した大の親日家。某缶コーヒーのCM。けれど、最近の彼しか知らないのでは？
彼は60年代、70年代に次々とヒットを飛ばした。ソフトなビートと、思わず口ずさんでしまうメロディー。その完全なグルーヴと彼の歌声がリスナーを奮い立たせる。他のシンガーとは一線を画して独特なスティーヴィーの音を作り出した。
それはさらにThe SupremesやSergio Mendes & Brazil ’77といったアーティストたちに影響を与え、たくさんのカバー曲を生んだ。それがこの2枚組のアルバムに集約されている。
今回は分かりやすく『Pastime Paradise』を紹介しよう。スティーヴィー、そしてRay Barretto（レイ・バレット）と引き継がれ、そして90年代。ヒップホップスター、Coolio（クーリオ）がヒットを飛ばした『Gang Star Paradise』として甦った。
彼はアーティスト同士を近付ける。そして、彼らと僕たちとも同様に近付けた。僕はまだ、Stevie Wonderがいなくなることを許すわけにはいかない。
